When Lived Experience Drives Innovation: A Conversation with Scott Joffre

What happens when the people who actually use assistive technology have a voice in shaping what comes next?
That question is at the heart of our newest episode of The EKO Lens, where I sat down with blind influencer, content creator, and accessibility advocate Scott Joffre for a conversation about blindness, technology, independence, and the future of accessibility.
Scott's story is about much more than the technology he uses. We talked about his journey with vision loss, finding his place within the blind community, becoming a content creator, and using his platform to help other people discover tools and resources that can make everyday life more accessible.
But one theme kept coming up throughout our conversation: lived experience matters when we talk about innovation.
Accessibility Has to Start With the People Using the Technology
There is incredible technology being developed for people who are blind and have low vision. Screen readers, artificial intelligence, accessible apps, navigation tools, wearable technology, and adaptive devices are changing what's possible every day.
But creating innovative technology and creating accessible technology aren't always the same thing.
Scott and I talked about why people with disabilities need to be included before a product reaches the market—not after. Accessibility testing should involve real users who can identify barriers, ask questions developers may not have considered, and explain how a product actually fits into everyday life.
At Eko Vision Foundation, this is something we believe deeply: design with us, not simply for us.
Lived experience isn't just a story to include at the end of the development process. It's expertise that can make technology better from the beginning.
Technology That Supports Independence
Throughout our conversation, Scott shared some of the technology he uses and his experiences navigating accessibility as a blind person. We talked about screen readers, accessible apps, assistive devices, and the ways technology can create greater independence.
One of the most interesting parts of our conversation was Scott's customizable cane.
As Scott joked during the episode, "My cane is like a lightsaber, but for the blind."
It's funny, but there's something important underneath that statement. Assistive technology doesn't have to be purely functional or clinical. It can reflect personality. It can be innovative. It can be something a person is genuinely excited to use.
That's an important shift in how we think about disability technology.
People who are blind and have low vision shouldn't have to choose between something being accessible and something being thoughtfully designed. We deserve both.
AI Is Creating New Possibilities
Of course, we couldn't talk about the future of accessibility without talking about artificial intelligence.
AI is already changing how many people who are blind or have low vision interact with information. Tools can describe images, help make digital content more accessible, answer questions, summarize information, and assist with tasks that previously required another person.
As someone who uses AI as part of my own accessibility toolbox, I find this especially exciting. Technology like ChatGPT and other AI-powered accessibility tools can create another layer of independence.
But AI isn't perfect, and technology alone isn't the answer.
The future of accessibility shouldn't be about replacing human connection with artificial intelligence. It should be about asking how technology can remove barriers, increase access, and give people more choices about how they navigate their lives.
Representation Changes What's Possible
Another part of Scott's story that stood out to me was his work as a content creator.
There is something powerful about seeing another person who is blind simply living their life, using technology, navigating challenges, trying new things, and sharing what they've learned along the way.
Representation can quietly change someone's understanding of what is possible.
For someone who is newly experiencing vision loss, finding a blind creator online may be the first time they see someone who shares part of their experience. It can introduce them to a technology they've never heard of, teach them a new accessibility skill, or simply remind them that blindness does not mean the end of independence, creativity, or ambition.
Scott summed up that possibility beautifully during our conversation:
"You can really do anything if you put your mind to it."
That doesn't mean barriers don't exist. They absolutely do.
It means accessibility, community, technology, and the right resources can help remove some of those barriers.
The Future of Accessibility Should Be Built With Us
If there is one thing I hope people take away from this episode, it's that the blind and low vision community should not simply be the end user of innovation.
We should be part of creating it.
Bring people with disabilities into product development.
Pay them for their expertise.
Include them in accessibility testing.
Listen when they identify barriers.
Invite them into conversations about AI and emerging technology.
And don't wait until a product is finished to ask whether it's accessible.
When lived experience is included from the beginning, we aren't simply creating better disability technology. We're creating better technology.
That's the kind of innovation I want to see more of—and conversations like the one I had with Scott remind me how much possibility there is ahead.
